A few days ago, I met a patient who has depression. I gave him a massage, and it was my first time treating a patient with depression. At first I thought he doesn't like to talk with others and he never smiled, however when I saw him, I discovered that he has a big problem---he is overweight and he said he does not like to exercise. Fortunately the doctors said he will be better after treatment.
Roughly 5 days after the treatment, I started to see some changes. The patient smiled more and enjoys exercising more than before. He is always the first one to go into the physical therapy room every morning, and spends about 1 hour exercising with his therapist.
During the massage time, he often taught me his own language and I taught him Chinese. I remember one time I wanted to give him a new time-table, but he didn't know English. I had to write it on a paper and translate it into Japanese and then transcribe it and show him. When I sent the new schedule to him, I could see he was very happy to read a Japanese schedule. At that time I knew the most important thing for a patient is not only the treatment but also the service. And I know that every staff member of the hospital can offer the best service to the patients.
