Maresu is a seven year old boy who came here from Argentina with his father and his doctor. Maresu has Batten disease and is a lovely boy. The first time I saw him I was surprised to see how thin he was. He weighed only 14.5 kilograms and was gravely malnourished. We could use the term "skin and bones" to describe him. He could not speak or walk. But throughout the years, his father has kept an optimistic attitude. His father often goes to the balcony to smoke and he will ask us if we smoke or not, first. We find this humorous, but maybe this is common in his country. His father does not speak English, so we use body language to communicate. Recently, Maresu has had a constant fever. Every time I finish taking his temperature, I extend my hand upwards, meaning that his temperature has gone up. The other way around means his temperature has dropped. This way his father will understand. His father is very friendly and looks after his son carefully and lovingly. I sincerely hope Maresu will feel better as soon as possible.
