Sharing our Mid-Autumn Festival with Bastam - 10/03/2009

By Dr. Pearly Liu

Today is the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese Festival. In fact, the Mid-Autumn Festival is not just unique to China, many foreign countries have Mid-Autumn Festivals, in particular Asian countries which were heavily influenced by Chinese culture.

During my childhood, I would hear people say that the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates being reunited with their family and even family members who are abroad will be reunited with their families back home in time.

Today I rested, and will be able to be reunited with my family, but this day I will inevitably have some sadness, because I am a doctor who treats patients who have travelled here from abroad, I have sympathy for them being so far from home. It must be difficult even though many patients have some family members who have accompanied them here.

Last night Bastam, who is one of our patients, was discharged from our hospital, and along with his parents, should be at the airport waiting for their flight home. This was Bastam's second time coming to China for treatment.  While watching his slow, but steady progress, I was very glad. His parents did all of the hard work and they have a lot of hope that Bastam will be able to walk by himself. He can walk some small steps by himself now. I could feel their appreciation from the look on their faces. We know how difficult it must be to go to a foreign country for treatment but we cannot fully understand everything they are going through. I would like to do everything I can to let them feel the warmth of home even though they are in a foreign country. One thing we can do is share the delicious moon cakes with them on this special day. We bless them in our hearts and we hope that all of the patients can recover early.
