Elaine Webb-ALS (Australia) Post on July 1, 2011

Name: Elaine Webb

Sex: Female

Country: Australia

Age: 57

Admission Date: 2009-07-21

Diagnosis: progressive bulbar paralysis

Days Admitted to the Hospital: 34

Elaine suddenly collapsed in 2007, with obvious nausea, but she was conscious at the time. She felt pain in the left rib cage area and received an examination at the local hospital the next day, but nothing unusual was found. In May, 2008 her speaking became ambiguous. During this time period she was diagnosed with progressive bulbar paralysis and was put on medication, but it was ineffective. Elaine's condition started to deteriorate further in January, 2009. The symptoms were aggravated; she had difficulty chewing and swallowing and had excessive salivation. She developed depression as a side effect of the medication she was taking.

During the examination of the nervous system before her first treatment at our hospital, there was atrophy and fibrillation in the tongue muscle. The bilateral soft palate was weak with the right side being weaker. The pharyngeal reflex was existent. She had excessive salivation, had swallowing difficulty, difficulty chewing her food, accompanied with obvious dysarthria. The muscle strength and muscle tone of all four limbs was normal. The tendon reflexes of all four limbs were normal and the abdominal reflex was normal. The bilateral Hoffmann's sign and Rossolimo's sign were negative. The bilateral Babinski's sign was neutral. The superficial sensation and deep sensation were normal. Elaine could finish the finger-to-nose test, rapid rotation test and Heel-knee-shin test almost normally. There were no signs of meningeal irritation.

From the onset of Elaine's illness, her spirit has been good. She lost 15KGs on a semi-liquid diet. Her sleeping quality was good.

Elaine received self stem cells activation treatment and treatment to improve the blood circulation and nourish the neurons, together with daily physical rehabilitation training and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

After the completion of the first round of treatment, Elaine's pronunciation had improved. The movements of the tongue were more flexible and the left side of the soft palate could be raised normally. The right side of the soft palate was still a little weak. The chewing muscles had strengthened and Elaine's swallowing ability had noticeably improved. The time it took Elaine to eat a meal decreased from 60 minutes to 20 minutes and her appetite had increased. Because of her increased appetite, she gained 2Kgs at that time.

Unfortunately, 2 years later her condition declined rapidly. So she decided to come back Wu Stem Cells Medical Center for a second treatment.

Second round of treatment:
Diagnoses: 1. Progressive bulbar paralysis (respiratory failure) 2. Lung infection 3. Liver dysfunction 4. Hypothyroidism
Admission Date: 2011-04-27
Days Admitted to the Hospital: 41

Elaine received stem cell activation treatment at our medical center in July 2009. After the treatment, Elaine's condition had shown good improvement. The chewing muscles got stronger and it took Elaine less time to eat her meals. Unfortunately within the last several months, Elaine's disease began to progress quickly again and she wasn't able to chew or swallow. The muscle strength of the neck was weak and she had difficulty raising her head. Elaine also developed breathing difficulty. The muscle strength in the left arm has rapidly decreased. Because of the recent relapse of her condition, Elaine decided to return to our medical center for a second round of stem cell treatment.

During Elaine's latest nervous system examination, she was in good spirits, her memory, calculation abilities and orientation was normal. Elaine was unable to move her tongue due to atrophy. There was also noticeable fibrillation. There was some difficulty with showing the teeth and expanding the cheeks. The soft palate muscles were weak making it difficult for the soft palate to be elevated. The pharyngeal reflex was diminished. There was excessive salivation and difficulty with chewing. At the present time, Elaine requires the use of an indwelling feeding tube. Because of the weakness in the muscles of the mouth, Elaine has difficulty pronouncing words. The muscle strength of the neck was weak making if difficult for her to raise her head. The muscle strength of the left side was level 3, and the muscle strength of the right side was level 4.The muscle tone of all four limbs was almost normal. The tendon reflexes of the left limbs were active, and the tendon reflexes of the right limbs were almost normal. The abdominal reflexes were not elicited. The bilateral palm jaw reflex was positive. The bilateral Hoffmann's sign and Rossolimo's sign were positive. The Babinski's sign of the left side was positive and the Babinski's sign of the right side was neutral. The deep and shallow sensation was normal through coarse measurement. Because of the weak muscle strength, Elaine was unable to finish the finger-to-nose test, rapid rotation test, or the Heel-knee-shin test. There were no signs of meningeal irritation.

During the five weeks of treatment, Elaine received nutrition and fluid infusion. She also received treatment to decrease the fibrinogen, protect the liver, correct the thyroxine levels, nourish the neurons, improve the blood circulation, and she received stem cells activation treatment. This was combined with daily physical rehabilitation training to restore the functioning of the arms and legs.

After the completion of the treatment, Elaine's mental status was good, and her state of nutrition had improved. Her weight had increased from before. The breathing difficulties were alleviated. There is no more coughing or expectoration. The moist rales have disappeared and the lung infection has been cured. The breathing degree of both lungs has been improved. The amount of salivation has been noticeably reduced from before. Elaine can now open her mouth slightly and say "ah."

The muscle strength of the neck has increased and Elaine can control the movements of the head both forward and backward as well as to the left and the right. The muscle strength of all four limbs has been increased, the muscle strength of the left upper limb is level 3+, the muscle strength of the left lower limb is level 4+, and the muscle strength of both right limbs is level 5-. Elaine can walk more than 100 meters both indoors and outdoors, and the respiration has improved. The fibrinogen has been restored to a normal level. The anemia has been alleviated. The liver functioning and thyroid functioning have been restored to a normal state.

At present, Elaine is engaged in writing a book and is in the process of getting it published. She will send the book to Wu Stem Cells Medical Center when it is finished and will write another book and put her cherished memories in it.

Elaine initiated a party before she left our hospital and took pictures with Dr. Wu and Dr. Wang.
