Alice - Congenital hydrocephalus(USA) Post on September 29, 2010

Name: Alice Paterson
Sex: Female
Country: USA
Age: 9
Diagnosis: Congenital hydrocephalus
Admission Date: 2010-08-04
Days Admitted to the Hospital: 37

Alice had a normal birth, but two days later, her doctors discovered that she had perencephaly while giving her an examination. After the operation, Alice was completely healthy. 2 months later, her head swelled up rapidly. Alice became unresponsive. She was eventually unable to raise her head. The development of her language skills and general intelligence was delayed. Her physical development was also delayed. She received a V-P shunt when she was 2 years old. After the operation, her condition did not see any obvious improvements. Alice's parents had her participate in physical rehabilitation therapy between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. The motor functioning of the limbs did not improve as a result of the physical therapy.

When Alice was first admitted to our hospital, we gave her a nervous system examination and she was in good spirits at that time. Her body posture was abnormal. She also suffered from oligophrenia. She had strabismus affecting the left eye.

When we attempted to give Alice a physical examination, the cranial nerves made the process difficult. We observed that all four limbs had some activity. The muscle tone of all four limbs was high, about level 3. Both of Alice's lower limbs had hyperreflexia of the tendons and as a result the limbs could not be separated.

We initially gave Alice a complete examination, and then we gave her treatment to improve the blood circulation in order to increase the blood supply to the damaged neurons. We gave her anti-free radicals treatment and nourishment for the neurons. She was also given daily physical rehabilitation training.

After the completion of the treatment, Alice's condition had shown good improvement. Her height is 110cm, and her weight is 20Kg.

Alice's pronunciation has gotten better. She also has better control of the movements of her neck. She can raise her head for about 30 seconds. The abnormal posture has been greatly improved. The muscle tone has been noticeably decreased from the levels before the treatment. The legs are now much more flexible and the associated movement problems have decreased obviously. The strength of both upper limbs has increased.
When Alice is in a sitting position, her left arm can be raised to a 120¡ã angle and her right arm can be raised to an 80¡ãangle. The muscle strength of the lumbar spinal cord has also increased.
